The Underground Shooting Range

The RTNA Shooting Club is in the basement.

The underground shooting range is in the basement of the second dormitory building. The RTNA Shooting Club was established here a long time ago. Nobody knows when the club was established and when the shooting range was built, but we know it changed from a store room. 20 Naval Cadets are the members of RTNA Shooting Club. NC. Panupong Jamruenwong is the head of the club.
This range is divided in 2 parts. Part 1 is the sport guns arsenal. It stores a lot of the sport guns, such as short air guns, long air guns and standard guns.

(A Short Air Gun)
The standard gun differs from the air gun. The standard gun drives the bullet with gunpowder but in the air gun the bullet is driven by air. The standard gun uses competition bullets. They are the same as real bullets but their heads are made of plastic instead.

(Rifles)
Part 2 is the shooting lanes. There are hand roll targets for training. The hand roll target are controlled with the pulley. Before you shoot, you have to stick your target on the pulley.

Then you have to roll it to the shooting range and after the shooting you have to roll it back to pick up your target. It shows your shooting skill!

The Shooting Range in the underground chamber.

The RTNA Shooting Club has 2 places for training. The first place is the underground shooting range. It is the air gun training place but it isn’t wide enough for training a standard gun, so the club always trains that in the Phuti-Anan Shooting Range, Bangna. It isn’t far from here and it is suitable for training every kind of gun.
This range has other benefits. It is a sleeping and relax range. We can used this range all the time when we want to use it. You can get the key from NC. Panupong, but you should use it in your free time only. If you come here, you will see old bicycles. There are three mountain bikes here. The bikes have been kept for five years because the RTNA bicycle club closed.
Nowadays, the range is very dirty because Naval Cadets rarely use it. In addition, some Naval Cadets don’t know where the RTNA Shooting range is, so Naval Cadets who know about the range call it “The RTNA Secret Chamber”. We think it is a very interesting place and it is a good place to practice shooting.

Interview

Oxford United Group interviewed NC. Panupong Jamruenwong, the head of the RTNA Shooting Club and supervisor of the underground shooting range.

Oxford: We will introduce a member of the RTNA Shooting Club. His name is Panupong Jamruenwong and we will talk with him. Hello, NC. Panupong.

NC. Panupong: Hello, I’m glad to meet you.

Oxford: I’m too. What do you do in the RTNA Shooting Club?

NC. Panupong: I’m the head of the RTNA Shooting Club.

Oxford: How is the RTNA Shooting Club related to the underground shooting range?

NC. Panupong: Because the Club was established at the basement of the second dormitory building. The underground chamber was used to build the shooting range because this is a sound proof chamber, and the next reason is that it is convenient to train the shooting because the chamber was big enough to hold a small arsenal.

Oxford: Do you know when the Club was established here?

NC.Panupong: I’m not certain but I heard from some alumni it was established here more than ten years ago.

Oxford: How many kinds of guns are there in this chamber?

NC. Panupong: There are 4 kinds of the guns in this chamber. The first kind is the long rifle gun, the second is the long air gun, the third is the short air gun and the last kind is the standard air gun. Each kind of gun has to use different bullets and targets.

Oxford: Why are there bicycles in your club?

NC. Panupong: The RTNA Bicycle Club has been closed for 5 years and in the chamber there was space, so 3 bikes are kept here.

Oxford: Why do some Naval Cadets call it “The Secret Chamber”?

NC. Panupong: Because the chamber is in the basement and many Naval Cadets aren’t interested in shooting, so some don’t know where the shooting club is.
