HTMS THONBURI was
the first offshore patrol vessel warship in the Royal Thai Navy. She
showed bravery in the great ship battle at Chang Island owing to the
conflict between Thailand and France on January 17, 1941. The Thai
force could intercept the France force that had an advantage. The
French force had to withdraw, but also got heavily damaged by
Lieutenant-Commander Prom Weerapun, the commanding officer of Thai
ship. The
complement consisted of officers, chief petty officers, petty officer,
seamen, and about 35 died. The HTMS Thonburi ran aground and
sank at Ngop cape coast, Trad Province. In order to record the history
of the Navy and our country, the RTN brought the bridge of the ship and
the structure sides to be a monument at the RTNA so that naval cadets
remember the sacrifice and the bravery of our ancestors and take pride
in the Navy nowadays.

Although we lost all three warships with officers and crews (total
36 people), the ability of the Thai warships could defend French
warships, so that the result was much damage and the French warships
retreated. That event could prevent the French Navy forever so Thailand
kept its sovereignty.
Thailand honors the heroes of that event.
