The Seaman-Farmer Games
This game started more
than 50 years ago when the RTNA rugby football team invited the
Kasetsart University rugby football team to practice in the RTNA.
Friendship between the two institutions was built in a short time.
Captain Sawatt Putianan, the RTNA Commandant, and Dr. Sawan
Wajoggasikit, president of Kasetsart University encouraged both rugby
football teams to build friendship between the two institutions for
better cooperation in the future, for sportsman spirit and for unity in
Thai society. In 1952 it became the Royal Thai Naval Academy- Kasetsart
University sports. In that first Game, Commander Latti Tamisanon was
the team manager of the RTNA and Mr. Seri Trirat was the team manager
of Kasetsart University.
Later, the Royal Thai Naval Academy- Kasetsart University Games changed
its name to the Seaman-Farmer Games: naval cadets work at sea so we are
called seamen and Kasetsart University students work in agriculture so
they are called farmers. The Seaman-Farmer Games disappeared for about
ten years. The Games were brought back as an annual competition
recently.
Now the Royal Thai Naval Academy and Kasetsat University join to play
the traditional sports we call Seaman-Farmer Games every year. The
Royal Thai Naval Academy and Kasetsart University take turns to host
the Games. The Seaman-Farmer Games consist of three main activities.
(1) Tour session
We make a tour around the host institution. If the RTNA is the host we
will take Kasetsart University students to the Chulachomklao Fort, if
Kasetsart University is the host they will take the naval cadets to see
agricultural land.
(2) Sports session
We play rugby football, basketball, petanque, sepuk-takraw (a ball game
played with a wicker ball), tug of war etc.
(3) Party time
At the party we have folk songs, fancy drill show and sing each
institution’s song together to close the party. About 700 people join
these Games.

We interviewed Captain Chutima Neampohka, math professor, former Kasetsart University Student.
Q: How long have you known about the Seaman-Farmer Games?
A: I’ve been joining it since I was a student at Kasetsart university, I had work there about 32 years ago , but I did join this activity before that.
Q: What activities did you like to do?
A: I liked to go to the mouth of the river because I sat on the boat and floated in the Chao Praya river and there were naval cadets taking care of everything. Naval cadets were very lovely (at that time).
Q: What is the difference between activities in the past and nowadays?
A: In the past, the Seaman–Farmer Games was as grand as the Samsamor [Three-Anchor] night. There were many naval cadets and Kasetsart students at the party at night. There were a lot of activities at the party; we cooked together, sang songs and danced. Some of the Kasetsart University students (men) that drank too much, slept with naval cadets in the RTNA because they couldn’t go back and they would be brought clothes to change in the morning too.
Q: What do you think about the Seaman-Farmer Games nowadays?
A: Nowadays I think it’s smaller than the past. It may be about the budget to work. Now it’s like the two schools come to play sports more than to join in activities.
Q: Besides sports, what else do we get from this tradition?
A: Yes, we are now friends and some people have met their soulmates at this event. In the future, we don’t know what will happen. Maybe people we meet in the Seaman-Farmer Games will become our colleague or spouse, but there is something that you will get for sure. It is friendship.
