The History of the RTNA Rugby Team

The RTNA Rugby Team is a legend. They are unbeatable when they are in the field. No one can beat the team. All Cadets want to join at least one sport club to avoid being called “a common cadet”. So, the rugby has become the most wanted for naval cadets to join in.
The RTNA and Kasetsart University were the first two teams in Thailand which played rugby. At first, they imported this kind of sport from England during the training cruise which visited England in the past. And then they became much more famous by the increasing amount of fans which caused other teams to be established. The RTNA won a lot of trophies. This was the first team that conquered all cups in Thailand in one season at that time, such as the British Council, University Cup, Cadet Games and much more. So, people wanted to know what the cadets ate, how they trained and wondered why they couldn’t be beaten. A few years later, the first high school that played rugby was established. Its name is “Vajirawut College”. Then rugby in Thailand became much more popular.
Now, the team is bigger than in the past. There are not less than 50 players in the team which includes all four years of cadets. We join many competitions but we can’t win them all because of the increase of good rugby players of other teams. We will not stop to improve our play. We train very hard all year throughout the two semesters to be as good we can. Although we have met some failures this season, we believe some day it will be our change to make the legend come true. The biggest cup for the team is the Cadet Games. We are concerned about the next generation players and try in every way to be as good as the old standard that we set last year. We are quite sure that rugby is one of the best sports that everyone can play easily and it will be fun. Don’t forget to try it….

An interview with the captain of the RTNA rugby team

1.What happened in the Cadet Games this year?

Alongkot: This year the team entered the competition as usual. We won two matches and lost one match. So, the result wasn't good enough to qualify for the final match.

2.What do you think about problems of the team that need to be improved?

Alongkot: A lot of things need to be improved. Although we have a lot of good players playing in the Cadet Games this year, the players are fourth-year cadets. Next year, the new generation players aren't strong enough to fight with other teams that have more experience than them. The second thing that we have to fight is the time schedule in our everyday life. It is too tight so that we are not enough time on the field. I hope someone will give us more time to practice rugby.

3.Which team do you predict will be the champion next year?

Alongkot: The championship holder, the RTAFA. But the Police will be the best challenger and I'm quite sure that our team will be good enough to beat them.

4.What do you think about the champion holder of the 2007 Rugby World Cup?

Alongkot: The Springboks?? They deserve to be the champion. All players are known worldwide and the teamwork is so smooth. England is good too, but at this moment Springboks are much better.

5.What do you think about Thai's rugby union?

Alongkot: I hope rugby will be promoted more and become more popular in Thailand. Why shouldn't there be a professional league for the next generation players and better development to make rugby much more famous?

Versus RPCA

Here is our tackling performance....and we won from the police team above

The hard game vs RTAFA

Although we have lost that game, we are quite sure that we've done our best.
