THE CADET GAMES
The Cadet Games
were first held in 1961 by Field Marshal Thanom Kittikhajohn, the
Minister of Defence, who had a vision of sports that sports make a
cadet healthy, active and happy. The first Cadet Games were held in
1961 with the Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy as host. There were
the Royal Thai Naval Academy, the Royal Thai Air Force Academy, the
Royal Thai Police Cadet Academy and the Royal Thai Survey Academy
joining the event. The host changed every year. Later, the Royal Thai
Survey Academy was closed.
Since then there are only 4 academies that take part in the
competition. In the first few years there were only 3 kinds of sports:
rugby, football and basketball. In 1964, Takraw (which is played with
a rattan ball) was added in the Cadet Games. The next year badminton
was added in the Cadet Games. In 1966 the Royal Thai Naval Academy
wanted to add athletics but it was denied because it was a waste of
money. There were many kinds of sports and it had a bad effect on the
study of the Cadets. So in 1982 the conclusion of a meeting was, "
there should be 4 kinds of sports: rugby, football, basketball and
athletics, in the competition." Since then there are only 4 kinds of
sports.
In our group there are 3 people who play rugby: Nu, Jack and Keng. The
result of this year was not successful because we lost all sports. The
first reason is, that our Academy has fewer cadets than other
Academies. Second, we don't have enough training equipment and most of
it is old. Finally, we don't have enough time for training. So, we
will try to practice more in order to win and we will be the champion
in
the Cadet Games in the future.

NC: How do you feel about coaching the RTNA rugby team in the Cadet Games?
Ensign: Yes, it was quite tough, because when you are the RTNA coach you have to know everything about every position in the team. And you have to plan what to do each week.
NC: What do you think about the result?
Ensign: I was a little disappointed. We have the potential to win, and we won, but we didn’t know the details of the rules, so we didn’t qualify for the final round.
NC: Did the training go the way you wanted it?
Ensign: No, it didn’t. The Naval Cadets had a lot of activities to do. I want the Naval Academy to give more priority to the Cadet Games.
NC: In your opinion, what things should be improved next year?
Ensign: The time available for training.
NC: Will you come again next year?
Ensign: I sure want to come, but I’m working aboard now, so I don’t have much time.
But if I have free time I’ll come.
NC: Please predict next year’s result for us.
Ensign: Next year, most of the first teamplayers from this year will have graduated,
and the rookies in this team have very little experience, so if you want to be the champion it would be tough.
